1946 - A Great Need Spawns a Great Solution

The story of 3M began in 1902, when Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. was established as a mining operation. A few decades later, while WWII devoured rubber supplies, alternatives were needed. A solution emerged from the work of 3M scientists Snell, Oace, and Eastwold—and the electrical world was never the same.

Over the next few years vinyl electrical tape set a standard across the electrical industry. Stronger and less prone to rotting and corrosion than the rubber and/or resin infused cloth in common use at the time, Scotch® No. 33 Vinyl Electrical Tape was an invention the world was waiting for.

The Science of Electrical Tape

There are many who think, "Oh, it's just tape, this will be good enough." Fortunately, 3M takes tape very seriously. We pride ourselves in making exceptional tapes that help meet your needs, solve your problems and make your job easier.

Believe it or not, making a quality tape takes a lot of science, much of it behind the scenes. We consider all of the physical, electrical and chemical characteristics for each and every tape we produce.

Need a tape that is extremely sticky but doesn't leave a gooey mess when you remove it? That's 3M Science!

Need a tape that resists the effects of sun, wind and rain while also insulating a connection up to 69,000 Volts? That's 3M Science!

To that end, 3M offers a wide range of electrical tapes and mastics for insulation, splicing, protection from corrosion and mechanical damage, all weather protection and environmental sealing.

From Scotch® Super 88 Vinyl Electrical Tape to Scotch® 130C Linerless Rubber Splicing Tape to Scotch® 69 High Temperature Glass Cloth Tape, 3M Electrical Tapes provide exceptional performance and reliability. That's 3M Science. Applied to Life.
