Whether you are a Dentist, Orthodontist or work in a dental lab, easy-to-follow workflows are provided from taking the initial scan to seating the final restoration.

Overview of basic scanning workflow


  • 3M™ True Definition Scanner

    1. Scan, review and approve

    Scan the operative and opposing quadrant or arch and take a bite scan with patient in centric occlusion. Review and approve: The system will not allow you to send a file until you review and approve your prep using powerful assessment tools.

    2. Prescribe and send

    Enter the prescription including type of restoration, material, shade, etc. "Sign" the prescription using a unique PIN number assigned to the dentist. Send the highly accurate digital impression to the 3M™ Connection Centre - a secure, cloud-based hub where you can share and store digital impressions.

    3. Design and produce

    The STL file can be accessed by your lab for design and fabrication or you can choose to design and mill chairside, restore implants or create orthodontic appliances through one of the broad array of Trusted Connections. Or export the STL files and share them with any open CAD/CAM system.

    4. Seat and cement

    Once complete, you can seat and cement the restoration during a same-day or second appointment.

  • 3M™ True Definition Scanner

    1. Scan, review and approve

    Scan the full arch using the 3M™ True Definition Scanner. The large touch screen serves as a virtual digital loupe, enabling you to view, rotate and magnify the 3D scan to scrutinize the impression before sending it to the 3M™ Connection Center.

    2. Prescribe and send

    Enter the prescription. "Sign" the prescription using your unique PIN number. Send the highly accurate digital impression to the 3M™ Connection Center - a secure, cloud based hub where you can share and store digital impressions.

    3. Design and produce

    The STL file can be used to create orthodontic appliances through one of the trusted connections. Or export the STL files for viewing or to share with any open CAD/CAM system.

    1. Set bite plane

    The first step in preparing the raw scan data for model production is to select a full arch or quadrant articulator. Next, align the digital impression inside the scan to ensure all the relevant anatomy is captured in the model.

    2. Trusted model workflow

    After selecting the articulator, 3M™ Margin Marking Software gives you the ability to section the model around the die. These precision die cuts are created by drawing a two-dimensional line across the digital scan file.

    3. Mark margins

    The true advantage of 3M™ Margin Marking Software is the advanced margin marking tools. Unlike traditional scanners and CAD packages, 3M™ Margin Marking Software provides a full stereoscopic view of the 3M™ True Definition Scanner impression. This allows dental technicians to mark the 3D mesh or stereoscopic image with utmost precision.

    4. Review and submit

    Once you've reviewed the fully marked margin, submit the case to the automated model production system where sophisticated algorithms prepare the full arch or quadrant working model for printing. After receiving the printed SLA models, lab technicians can apply the appropriate techniques to create the strength and esthetics that are clinically appropriate for each case.
    Upon completion, labs can deliver high-quality restorations to their dental customers for final placement.
