Combine innovation with tradition.

From Bordeaux to Borassa, and from Mendoza to Napa, winemakers work with 3M filtration and dissolved gas control to consistently craft the finest wines year after year. 3M innovations include the dual-zone depth filter with a lenticular design: 3M™ Zeta Plus™ Series and 3M™ Liqui-Cel™ membrane contactors for dissolved gas control.

We design systems to help producers improve their wine making process and we work with individual producers to define an ideal system for clarification, prefiltration and final filtration. This results in systems capable of reducing the total cost of filtration, while still focusing on efficiency and reliability.

The Winemaking Process

A typical winemaking process is often very natural and requires minimal human intervention, however, wine filtration plays a key role at certain stages. At the very beginning, the winemaking process starts when ripe grapes are harvested, crushed and then pressed, only finishing when a perfectly clear and aged wine is bottled. Filtration is used at key points and tends to get successively more refined throughout the process; beginning with a coarse clarification, before moving to more refined stages to polish the wine. The finest stage of wine filtration is through a final membrane which helps to control microorganisms which if left, can prematurely foul the wine.

Gas management is also utilised within the winemaking process to control CO₂ and O₂ levels that can impact aroma and taste.

Polishing Clarification

Rough, polishing and ultrafine clarification steps remove any carry over of dead yeast cells from the fining stage along with hazes.

Ultrafine Clarification

Gas Management

Gas management is employed in several ways in a winery. From controlling dissolved gas that impacts quality, to sanitisation of water for equipment.

Final Membrane Filtration

Final filtration is required to create stability and prevent spoilage after being bottled. Final filtration removes microorganisms and other contaminants that can spoil both hardy and delicate wines.

    Water Pre-treatment

3M filtration and gas management products can help you by providing clean and deoxygenated water for your tank, washing and rinsing, flushing, warm water regenerating, and hot-water sanitising. Reduce small particles and microorganisms from prematurely fouling your wine filters, reduce dissolved oxygen levels to increase the stability of your wine, and get closer to your goal of a perfectly finished product.
